We recently booked a client’s family trip to the best all-inclusive, Jumby Bay. It’s not a traditional all-inclusive at all but yes, the food is included. Memorial Day weekend is a few weeks away. Do you have plans? 🌴🌝 We love a Jersey Shore summer or a New England long weekend as much as anyone. But sometimes the holiday calls for something a little different. If you're East Coast based, here are five places we'd send you for MDW: all a short(ish) direct flight, and all worth the trip. 💂 London: yes, really. The flights are direct and short from the East Coast, the hotels are excellent (from historic properties to boutiques), and there's plenty to do for a long weekend including an incredible dining scene (current highlight: the Wes Anderson archives exhibit). Extend your trip with a train to Paris 🌹 English Countryside: only a short train or drive from Heathrow, the country manor scene has never been better (and many are family-friendly) - think upstate but with British sparkling wine, manicured gardens, and historic (and renovated) houses. Personally, we're heading to @thenewtinsomerset @beaverbrook & @greatfosters (6 Michelin keys among them) this summer to scout them out for you. 🍷 Douro Valley, Portugal: wine country only 60-90 minutes from Porto (with direct short flights from the East Coast) and some of the most beautiful vineyard landscape we've seen (and we've traveled from Napa to Piedmont to Tuscany). Our favorite properties are both a resort-like retreat and wine-and-food destination - a great way to unplug for busy parents for a long weekend. We're checking out @sixsensesdourovalley this Spring and have clients at @octant.douro 🌴 Caribbean: flights from the Northeast are fast, the weather is still good (pre-hurricane season), the rates are lower and the Spring Break crowds have died down. Don't overlook a peaceful weekend at @belmondcapjuluca @thelorenbermuda or an off-season visit to St Barths. And yes, we have opinions on which island and which hotel is right for you. 🌞 California: from Ojai, to Big Sur, to Laguna Beach to a city break in LA. We’ve lived in and traveled extensively through Europe and our summer client calendar is almost full. 🗓️ Here’s how we plan clients’ itineraries to actually enjoy Euro summer: ✨ Don’t try to visit every town. La dolce vita is about going slow and spending real time in fewer places. 🍝 ✨ We don’t let our clients drive the Amalfi Coast. Narrow roads with nowhere to park is not how you want to spend your vacation. 🚗 ✨ Thinking July or August in Positano or the South of France? Hotel availability is limited and prices are high. It’s doable, but you need to be prepared to splurge and decide quickly. 💡 ✨ Ischia for calm, Capri for scene. And the English countryside is having a moment. Tuscany and Portugal are still worth it in summer and we book our clients at hotels with the pools and areas to escape the heat. ☀️ ✨ Don’t overlook shoulder season. A last minute Memorial Day Weekend trip or vacation in September and October when the crowds die down and the sea is still warm are some of our favorite times to travel. ✈️ Europe in summer looks very different depending on who you are and how you travel.
